Both my older and younger students created these paintings inspired by the art of Salvador Dali. After looking at Dali's artworks and pointing out how giving the elephants long thin spidery legs makes them nonsensical, the students began their own artworks. We started with a wash for our background, something that was new and exciting for a lot of them. I demonstrated how to draw a Dali-style elephant, but also invited them to create their own long-limbed animals or creatures if they wished. We finished by talking about scale and adding buildings, people, or other features, such as mountains, that are dwarfed by the large elephants.
Here are just a few of the resulting paintings:
I love the tail on this doom kitty, as well as the yellow glow from the house
This artist decided to paint the elephant riding a skateboard
These last ones were done by two girls who decided to create sabre-toothed tigers. I love the tiny figure in the first and the falling snow and waves of ice in the second.
